“This Way Home” by Icarus is riveting techno album that grabs your attention from the very first beat and doesn’t let it go until the album comes to a close. Icarus is the artistic brainchild created by Joel, a techno artist who has been creating for thirty years. His lengthy experience in the music world is clear in his clean and addicting sound. This nine track album is eclectic yet cohesive, providing dynamic sonic journeys time and time again. For anyone who needs an energetic song at home, or a club banger for a night out, “This Way Home” has got you covered.
The album opens with the title track, dropping in with a heavy kick drum, lightly tapping hi hats, and staticky, punchy bass. The bass and kick drum stay fairly steady throughout the entire song, offering a reliable backbone as other elements of the arrangement grow and twist around them. Uniquely textured synths pulse in and out of the arrangement as other percussive elements are slowly introduced, growing more intense as the song goes on. Subtle piano then begins to provide melody and little moments of electron ear candy ripple across the arrangement.
Another standout track on the album is the closer, “Are We There Yet.” It opens with filtered piano and a sweeping ambience that builds tension as it grows. A kick drum and echoing tambourine join in, soon followed by a satisfying snare and dancing synth melody. Each of these songs carry their own vibe, and every one of them is immensely fun.
