“Regression“ by Jaz

“Regression” by Jaz is an acoustic folk track full of love and compassion. Jaz wrote this song for his sister, and talks about the way she has changed since they were kids. Though of course everyone changes as they grow, it sounds like she has lost some of the joy and liveliness she had as a child. Jaz seeks to remind her of herself, as well as remind her that he is always there for her. A sweet song with soft yet impactful production, “Regression” is an intimate track that deserves a spot on your playlists.

Plucking acoustic guitar opens the song and continues to provide the rhythmic backbone throughout the track. Other big guitar chords ring out across the arrangement, building an enveloping atmosphere. Later, a thumping kick drum hits every beat as the rhythm of the vocal melody speeds up and emotional piano chords begin to play, heightening the tension of the track. After the first chorus, a quick snare joins the main rhythm, along with layered “ooos” in the background, drawing you in even further.

Lyrics like “I remember you when we were kids, you were happy and your heart so pure” and “you know I love you sis, even when your head is in a mess” display the worry Jaz is feeling for his sister. He also quotes her directly, telling us that she said “I used to care more, now I just mind my business.” It seems with the loss of youthful naivety, she has become jaded and withdrawn, which unfortunately, many of us can probably relate to. “Regression” explores this topic with compassion and love.
