Broadcasting to the world from Stockport in the United Kingdom, new aged folk pop outfit James Stephen & The Good Ones have emerged from the studio and begun to debut their music to the world. Defined by their tranquil, melodic rhythm, and a sense of lyrical motivation that drives the listener to see the world through their eyes, the project has made a strong impact on their growing fanbase from the earliest days. Led by the project’s frontman and namesake James Stephen, their Freshman single “Growing Up” presents listeners with the artist’s unique reverence for the stages of life they have passed and a sense of longing for youthful simplicity.
A series of muted acoustic guitar cords begin the piece, introducing the full band to enter simultaneously in symphonic harmony moments after, invoking imagery of an Americana orchestra. Stephen’s vocals enter quickly into the tune, beginning the narrative with the opening line “I remember feeling all grown up, drinking Vimto out of plastic cups, pretending it was wine. Waiting for the day that I could dance the night away, not have to be in bed by nine.” Immediately, we feel a sense of connection with the lyrics, and are prompted to reevaluate our own relationship with our own nostalgia through these lyrics.
Playing as a sentimental, yet pensive reflection of the human condition, the single gives listeners a glimpse into the artist’s mind and philosophies on the relationship between their past and present; fully appreciative of the memories that shape us, but without offering a simple explanation for what everything could mean just yet. Having defined their unique sound so early in their career, fans can only wait with anticipation to see what could possibly be coming next from this young band.
