Broadcasting to the world from Athens, Greece, nuanced alt rock outfit Music & other Addictions continues to grow their already devout fanbase with every release and performance. The brainchild of solo artist Elena Dimitrakopoulou, the songwriter, performer, and producer has made a measurable impact on their community at large through the passion and precision with which they craft each note of their music. Highlighting their robust repertoire of music, their EP The Inevitable Collapse of My Mediocre Dreams has continued to turn heads since its release. Headlined by its marquee single Counting Steps, the single showcases the artist’s dedication to cultivating an aural ambiance, as well as their vulnerability in their lyricwriting process with every verse.
The piece begins with a series of resonant and heavily embellished guitar notes that quickly set a dramatic and ominous mood. As the tonal direction of the music develops, the intentionality of the music becomes immediately clear as we feel the world of this song being built around us with every note. Before long, Dimitrakopoulou’s vocals appear, as she begins the narrative with the opening line “I look in the mirror, but I don’t see me. A reflection of doubt, trapped in misery.”
Through their utilization of suspenseful musicality and precise word choice in their dialogue, the track not only highlights the artist’s proclivities as a musician, but it also defines them as a performer. Having accomplished so much with this brief release, fans can only wait with anticipation to see what could possibly be coming from this artist’s mind next.
