Q: I love the rawness of this track! Your lyrics along with the hardhitting beat go together perfectly. Can you take me through your writing process in creating “Own Worst Enemy”?
LOGVN: My writing process feels so different with every song and matters completely with what kind of mindset I’m in and what’s going on at that moment for me. With ‘Own Worst Enemy’, life felt like something was going wrong day after day. I distinctly remember not even being able to buy food for a week because I didn’t have enough money to pay for both food and rent. I was in the middle of moving as well as losing some good friends of mine too. All that combined with my daily self-doubt and uncertainty about what I’m doing with my life made for a pretty rough few months. I wrote the chorus immediately after finding out I had to take the bus to get around now, it sounds small but it was the breaking point for me. I wrote this song with the intention of making it the most real/personal song that I have out right now. My whole “brand” is that I’m “only human”, everyone is “only human”. We need to remember that and be there for each other and if me being 100% authentic in my music means that others feel understood and not so alone then it is completely worth it.
Q: Who are your biggest influences?
LOGVN: Throughout most of my career, my biggest influences that have stuck with me have been Eminem, Hopsin, and NF. At the moment though I’m finding myself starting to have that same influence from artists like Joyner Lucas, Token and Logic as well. I’m just drawn to lyrically focused hip-hop and will always be open to new music/artists to pull inspiration from so long as I can feel there is passion in that music.
Q: Was there a pivotal moment in your life when you decided to follow your path as a musician?
LOGVN: I don’t know if there was ever just one moment, music has always been such a huge part of my life. I started writing just to get things off my mind and to take some stress out of life because I always bottled everything up, back then my writtens were just poems. I got bullied a lot growing up, got into a ton of fights, and had no real friends around me, I guess if I had to pinpoint a moment of the first time I wrote a “song”, it was actually a diss track to one of my high school bullies, which looking back on it now is actually pretty funny to me. After that, I got doubted and laughed at every single step of the way by every person in my life. So I felt like I had to prove them all wrong. I’d say around then is when I knew I had to take this path. Music has always been something I’ve wanted to do and I wasn’t going to let anyone tell me I couldn’t, their doubt and hatred actually only fueled me.
Q: What is the best advice you’ve been given?
LOGVN: Not everyone is going to like everything you do all the time. Some will hate this and that and others will love it. You shouldn’t let your fear of what others are going to think judge how you live your life.
Q: What do you do when you AREN’T working on music?
LOGVN: On the rare times I’m not working on music, I absolutely love playing video games. I’ll play whatever but my favorite are story, RPG, and adventure type games.
Q: You say you want to make people happy, which I admire. What do you hope listeners take away from this track?
LOGVN: I hope people take away that message of, everyone’s their own worst critic, ‘Own Worst Enemy’ is really about just that. In the song’s chorus, I speak directly on money issues and the stress of that but if you look more into it, specifically the verses, you’ll see that it’s much more than that. It’s about life wearing down on you and that feeling of having small things stack up again and again making life seem so horrible at the time. The stress of not being sure you can even afford a $2 bus pass is just the breaking point on top of everything else going on in your life. The song is to tell people that it’s ok, we all go through rough times like these and we all get through them, it’s just a reminder that you’re not alone no matter how alone you may feel, don’t beat yourself up too much.
Q: What would you like to tell your supporters out there?
A: I am absolutely honored you listen to me, whether while you’re working out, hanging with friends, or when you’re feeling like you need a friend, I’m just truly glad my music can be there for you. I want you to know that BIG things are coming. This year has been absolutely incredible due to all the amazing support I’ve been receiving and it has really helped open a bunch of doors for me which I couldn’t be more grateful for.
