The third song off of Mild Horses brilliant new album “Ignorance to Enlightenment and Back Again”, is an experience to the say the least; its gorgeous, dreamy guitars and beautiful soundscapes evoke deep, unnamed emotions that encourage multiple relistens, each of which you’ll happily partake in.
Mild Horses is the new and upcoming project by Matthew Leuw, who was previously involved with Norwich noise-poppers Crest, skronky Brighton art-punks Coin-op and was the guitar playing half of the lo-fi electro pop group 2 Hot 2 Sweat. These bands played/toured with a variety of notable bands (Deathcab For Cutie, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Mogwai, Inspiral Carpets, The Rapture, Trans Am, The Polyphonic Spree, Django Django, The Pastels, and British Sea Power to name but a few) recorded radio sessions for Radio One (John Peel, Steve Lamacq and Huw Stephens), XFM and Virgin Radio and played around and about (SXSW, Latitude Festival and the BBC Electric Proms amongst others).
Having taken a step back from music for a bit, this new album marks Matthews first foray into the studio in a long while. His quality, passion and attention to detail remain as intense as ever but there’s a clearer maturity to this record, cultivated from years of introspective song writing and exposure to other talented artists.
“Suited” is a standout from the record. It’s addictive melody and serene chordal structure inspire a particular emotional clarity. With hints of my bloody valentine’s fuzzy warmth and Slowdive’s floating and poetic lyrics, this track is a shoegaze daydream. While showing ode’s to the genre’s classics, Mild Horses has manged to define their own sound with brilliant voicings and gorgeous sonic textures.
