April 8, 2022 brought us “i’m done falling” by Michael Girgis. The track comes after a successful “Hold You Now” from 2021 and is the first single of 2022.
Unlike his last single, “i’m done falling” has a slower beginning. It starts with this instrumental that gradually rolls in before Girgis sings the first line. “How long do I go on letting my heart turn black and blue ‘cause I keep holding onto you.” The vocals are velvety. Smooth, with a hint of something more. Something rich. Something deep. There are so many different layers to “i’m done falling” as well. Girgis mixed and produced this beautifully. Everything works well together and nothing overpowers the rest.
Lyrically, the song tells us a story about finally leaving a relationship that should have ended a while back. You can tell that Girgis enjoys writing the stories that need to be shared. Stories that resonate with his audience. “I’m tired of the sleepless nights thinking how much I hate the stupid fights.” It’s a realization that something isn’t right. The relationship is over in all the ways that matter. It’s kind of a beautiful, bittersweet feeling.
Michael Girgis started releasing music about two years ago. His first single, “alive”, hit Spotify in 2020 with his next singles dropping in 2021. The LA native says he is a songwriter first and loves writing songs people can connect with. His inspirations include John Mayer, Jeremy Zucker, and Ed Sheeran. Q&A with Michael Girgis
Q: Your vocals are amazing. Did any real-life event inspire “i’m done falling”?
MICHAEL GIRGIS: “i’m done falling” was a reaction to my relationship with my ex. We ended on terrible terms and we were both just toxic for each other.
Q: “I’m done falling” was written, performed, and produced by you, right? What was your creative process like in making it?
MG: I wrote the song while I was taking a songwriting course taught by Charlie Puth through this website called Studio. I wanted to make a song where the music and the lyrics had the same type of energy. I knew I wanted big drums and a “Michael choir” as I like to call it.
Q: Are there any hidden gems in LA’s music scene?
MG: I think there’s a ton of hidden gems in LA. Just in my little circle of people I know, there’s this band called RAYLR and all of the guys in that band are crazy talented and are super genuine. And another artist that’s on the come up is Olivia Knox. And, not to sound cocky, but I would consider myself a hidden gem just cause I feel like I have a lot to bring to the table. So it’s not hard to find some good talent if you know where to look.
Q: Who would your dream collaboration be with?
MG: My dream collaboration would probably be with Jeremy Zucker. I’ve always loved his songwriting and storytelling with songs and how he’s so flexible in terms of genre. I really look up to him in that area because I don’t want to stick to one genre forever. I think our styles could match up pretty well.
Q: What is your go-to karaoke song?
MG: Go to karaoke song would have to be Feeling Good by Michael Bublé. My mom’s side of the family is Filipino so every get together we have, the karaoke machine comes out and it’s always a request.
Q: What projects are in the works for you now?
MG: Currently I’m working on my second independent album. It’s taken me two years to write it all and I’m gonna take this summer to really perfect it and fill in all of the missing pieces. The idea of the album is to follow a kid who lives in LA and it’s trying to follow his dream but, along the way, he experiences love, heartbreak, depression, anxiety, death, and a lot more. I’m really excited about it and I can’t wait to share it with the world.
