Canadian-born but now German-based artist Kinga Angelys is no stranger to passion and the creative process. For the better part of the last decade, she has given so much of her life to her craft and loved it thoroughly. While her enthusiasm has motivated her for so long, there will always be bumps in the road, and in a world that glamorizes the highs and ignores the lows, she has taken an opportunity to speak to the bigger picture of her musical career. In her newest single “Running on Empty” she explores the darker side of putting all of oneself into their art and the mental toll of burnout in music as experienced from the perspective of her own lens and all of those she has come to know in her creative sphere.
Musically this song serves as an anthem for those searching to reclaim their spark amidst a rut. Driven by acoustic strings and a “boomwhack” style of percussion, the single proves truly inspiring in a similar vein as a young Alanis Morissette or My Brightest Diamond. At its core, it serves to motivate those in a funk and reinforces the belief that for every ebb, a flow is just around the corner.
Lyrically the piece proves just as upbeat. While delivering a narrative fraught with opportunities to focus on the negative, Angelys displays her commitment to hang onto her positive spirit and desire to feel a fire underneath her once again as she repeatedly sings “Can’t you see I’m running on empty? Recharge, recharge me.”
The single speaks volumes not only about Angelys’ musical talents but mental fortitude throughout. Even in the depths of her greatest burnout, she has found the energy to turn that feeling into art that highlights her greatest skills.
