“Wishing Well“ by Ava Valianti

“Wishing Well” by Ava Valianti is an indie folk track that pulls on your heartstrings and brings your nostalgia for childhood to the forefront of your mind. With intimate and gorgeous vocals, soft acoustic guitars, and escalating production, the journey through this song allows you to remember your childhood and feel all of the complex emotions that come with the inevitability of growing up.

Childhood imagery of playground slides and swimming pools set the scene for this track as Valianti begins to reflect on her youthful memories and grapple with the fact that they are over. “Wishing Well” captures the almost impossible desire to keep your childlike wonder in the face of getting older and being introduced to reality. Valianti asks “can days be bright like that again?” as she realizes that the rose-colored glasses of youth were really something beautiful.

The incredibly emotional vocal performance, especially in the bridge, makes this song a special one. With Valianti’s progression from intimate head voice to powerful belting, and the way she keeps her emotion palpable the whole time, it is easy to connect with and be impacted by this song. As she longs for the simplicity of childhood, repetitive melodies in the vocal grow and build, matching that idea of trying to hold onto something that is gone. Though we can never go back to our childhoods, Valianti sings “I still believe in magic” and “my wishing well still full of pennies,” refusing to accept that growing up has to mean losing all of the magic in your life.
