“Shadows and Lines“ by Camille Miller

“Shadows and Lines” is a fun and versatile alternative pop-rock album by Portugal-based singer-songwriter Camille Miller. The album is full of catchy, layered gang vocals, bluesy rock rhythms, and teasing, sultry vocals. Covering a full range of sonics, from uptempo bangers like the opening track, “Leave It Alone,” to swaying ballads like “Summer Dress,” Miller showcases her diverse artistry in every melody, lyric, and production choice throughout “Shadows and Lines.”

“Leave It Alone” is a great track to start an album with, as it immediately tells us about Miller’s strong personality and grit. Lines like “snitches get stitches” and “walk away, leave it alone” show Miller’s sense of independence and her belief that it’s important to mind your business and let people do their thing. She doesn’t even attempt to “try and fit into a mold” because she knows following her heart and desires is the best way to be content in life. The energetic chanted vocals and captivating rhythms make the song a good time on top of the inspiring message.

Though much of the album is sonically upbeat and exciting, Miller is not afraid to get vulnerable on tracks like “Smoking Cigarettes” and “Flirting With Sobriety.” These tracks take a look at dealing with loss, grief, and alcohol reliance. Alcoholism is a destructive problem for many people, and Miller discusses this topic with grace and understanding. With lines like “when the pints weigh you down, the laughter won’t come” she poignantly describes the downfalls of alcohol in the same uniquely authentic style that is present in every song of the album.
