Q: The lyrics in “Promise Me” are sweet and vulnerable. What was your process in writing this song?
CAT CORK: My process was to find a more positive and uplifting message, and add simple imagery. Opportunities and potential catastrophes are all about but a couple choose to stay together and not pursue loftier goals. There is an element of sacrifice to that, being not able to realise goals. It has a bit of a negative side too. Very human and relatable hopefully. There is another song on the EP coming out on 17 Feb which deals with how such relationships might end up not working, called Better Off, which echoes this song – the choice to stay is pretending that there’s no ideal…
Q: Was there a pivotal moment in your life when you decided to follow your path as a musician?
CAT CORK: I come from a family of musicians. Grandparents were jazz musicians and made a living doing that alongside other work. Dad was a drummer and then organist who played weddings and churches, Mum a pianist who went through the Conservatorium and became a music teacher. I am a lawyer by trade but have taught music at times for a living. It is just normal for me to do.
Q: Who are your biggest influences? the music that you typically create?
CAT CORK: My biggest influences are very broad and diverse. I suppose I could rattle off Elliott Smith, the Beatles, the original Jesus Christ Superstar soundtrack, Queen, Harry Nilsson, Lenny Kravitz…but I listen to everything from melodic death metal to country music to EDM. I appreciate all music.nto the genre known as folktronica.
Q: Walk us through the process of creating the music video for this song.
CAT CORK: The video was made on Super 8 film by renowned actors Milo Cawthorne (Blood Punch, Guns Akimbo, Power Rangers RPM) and Ella Hope- Higginson. They came up with the concept and shot it all on location in New Zealand themselves. It is the first music video I’ve had for a song, and this one adds an extra dimension to the lyrics. I am very grateful to them.
Q: In your own words, how would you describe the music that you typically create?
CAT CORK: The music I create has to have a memorable melody, lyrics that are interesting or clever in some way, and with instrumentation that carries the song into entertaining places. I tend to avoid annoying sounds to be cool, or being “artistic” where that makes the song unlistenable. There’s a place for that but I don’t tend to bother with it myself.
Q: What is coming up next for you?
CAT CORK: I have an EP coming up on 17 Feb, which has Promise Me and another new 4 songs, all at bit more positive than my old material. I also have another EP of 5 or 6 songs that is 90% finished, ready for release in April/May 🙂
