“Marble Halls“ by Marble Raft

“Marble Halls” by Marble Raft is an indie pop track full of unique instrumentation and narrative driven lyrics that create a one of a kind story overtop the one of a kind production. This Swedish duo, made up of Olle Söderström and Gabrielle Werme Baker, craft the tale of two teenagers roaming through decadent and grand apartments that have long been abandoned. In these great halls, the teenagers find remnants from the past, basking in the borrowed riches and imagining what kind of lives the old owners must have lived.

The use of instruments like the twelve string guitar and the glockenspiel show how Marble Raft’s artistry sets them apart from the crowd. They have honed in on a lush and unpredictable sound, using dancing mellotrons and joyful guitars to craft this dreamy track. Another distinctive detail of the track is its time signature. While many pop songs tend to be in 4/4, “Marble Halls” uses the unusual 5/4 time signature, which gives the song a slightly uneasy rhythm, perfect for this story about exploring the past.

The lyrics of “Marble Halls” are imagery driven, painting a clear picture of the “marble halls of dusty riches,” full of various trinkets and dusty wines. The two characters sing to each other throughout the song, adding a certain layer of intimacy, especially when one of them exclaims “all of this is ours.” The vocals reverberate through the song, like they are really standing in a marble hall, further driving home the immersive listening experience of this tune.
