“turnstiles“ by SABS

“Turnstiles” by SABS is a catchy and poignant indie pop track about the inevitably confusing emotions that come with growing up. Introspective lyrics, smooth vocals, and energetic production all blend to create an impactful listening experience for every listener and their inner child. SABS merges intricate storytelling with contemporary sounds to craft a meaningful narrative with a beat you can dance to.

Lyrics like “I was younger just yesterday” and “all I ever do’s get older” display a relatable existentialism over the unrelenting march of time. As you grow up, time seems to move faster and faster, and it can seem like a childhood memory from years ago was actually just the other day. Getting older starts to feel like playing catch up, constantly trying to get a grip on what you want and who you are. SABS offers a cathartic, relatable soundscape to allow all of that confusion to come to the surface. The central metaphor of being stuck in a turnstile is a creative, and somewhat comedic, way to explore these feelings. Though a turnstile is relatively simple to use, losing sight of your destination or sense of self can cause the same self-doubt and embarrassment as getting caught in a malfunctioning turnstile.

Enchanting harmonies and catchy drum rhythms provide the song with dynamic energy, rising and falling as “Turnstiles” moves from section to section. The outro is a particularly fun moment of the song, with the densest arrangement you hear in the track. The chaotic production, layered vocal belts, big guitars, and riveting drum fills mirror all of the complicated emotions of SABS exploding into the world.
