“Drift and Drown“ by David Lussier

“Drift and Drown” by David Lussier is a retro rock song with a dynamic arrangement that offers a captivating sound from beginning to end. Lussier, a longtime instrumentalist and performer, merges modern indie sonics with classic rock dynamics to craft a song that is uniquely him. In “Drift and Drown,” he tells the story of a man who didn’t truly appreciate the relationship he had, but by the time he realized how much his ex was adding to his life, it was too late.

It can be an unfortunately common phenomenon to take what you have for granted. The selfish, and later regretful, nature of the narrator is a reminder to all of us that being loved by a romantic partner is a privilege, and if you stop valuing it, it is no longer yours to keep. The narrator sings about waking up “alone next to her” to show their growing distance. Later, when they have separated, he says he’ll “keep this ring” and just “drift and drown out here.” Without this love that he never thought to cherish, he is wandering with nothing but a keepsake.

Nostalgic acoustic guitars, swaying drums with tapping hi hats, and electric riffs in-between vocal lines all give the song a steady backbone with plenty of ear candy. In the later half of the song, a fiddle plays a lead melody as acoustic guitars pluck, offering a joyous and hopeful contrast to the chaotic dejection we’ve heard so far, representing the potential change in heart the narrator is experiencing.
