“You’ll Hate It Here“ by West Friends

“You’ll Hate It Here” by West Friends is a high energy emo rock track that pokes fun at the people who make fun of cities they’ve never been to, based on their reputation alone. West Friends is a fresh pop punk duo with roots in both Seattle, Washington and San Francisco, California, and “You’ll Hate It Here” is their debut single. This track is the perfect introduction to their sound, with the riveting production and playful themes that make you excited to hear what comes next from this band. 

Quick drum fills ripple across the intro of the track before big electric guitar riffs slam in. The vocal delivery and texture is reminiscent of early 2000s punk, and it provides immensely catchy melodies you can’t help but sing along to. The song remains energetic and fun the whole time, offering slight shifts in dynamics from section to section that keep the sonic journey interesting. With grungy guitars, thrumming bass, and layered vocals, “You’ll Hate It Here” is rich with ear candy.

The chorus centers around the lines “welcome, we hate it here” and “welcome, you’ll hate it here,” speaking directly to tourists who can’t truly understand how these cities can be more than a vacation destination.
