Artist Interview: “LA Don’t Look Good On U” by ASTN

Q: This song has compelling lyrics and solid production. What was your creative process in making “LA Don’t Look Good On U”?

ASTN: So I actually wrote the lyrics and put together a demo kind of stripped version in December of 2019. I remember being extremely happy with it and wanting to put it out immediately. After a few months of listening to it over and over, I sent the guitar loop and vocals to my friend, Luke Swirsky, to see what he could do with them. He essentially sent me back the final version a couple days later… not a lot was changed after that. He added so much energy to it and gave it a different feeling.

Q: Did any real-life events occur in your life that influenced the song?

ASTN: Moving to LA the summer before I wrote the song was without a doubt the inspiration behind the lyrics. I had visited a few times before, but actually being there for longer than 2 weeks was totally different.

Q:  Was there a pivotal moment in your life when you decided to follow your path as a musician?

ASTN: I’ve always known I’d end up in music. I just wasn’t quite sure how. I grew up playing drums but have always dabbled in singing behind the scenes. I had this cheap casio keyboard that I’d play on and sing when I was the only one home and just made more and more progress until I had the courage to post some covers. I had also been getting into music production around the same time so someone had to sing on my beats… why not me??

Q:  Your vocals are awesome! Who are your biggest influences?

ASTN: Thank you! I’ve had a thing for neo soul and r&b music for a while now and that’s been a huge influence in how I sing. Brent Faiyaz, Jazmine Sullivan, and Ty Dolla are my go-to’s but I also love Rascal Flatts, Jon Bellion, and Bieber. I feel like somewhere in there is where I found my voice. 5. What is coming up next for you? Honestly, the first thing that pops into my mind is just releasing a ton of new music. I’m tired of keeping these songs to myself. It’s time for people to hear what I’ve been hearing for what feels like forever.

Q:  What would you like to tell your supporters out there?

ASTN: I just want to say thank u for being patient. If you have been rocking with me for a while, you know 2020 wasn’t like me… I never go that long without releasing anything. This is a new year and I’m going vintage ASTN… but just a much more evolved version. I’m gonna give y’all what you have been asking for because you deserve it.
