Artist Interview: “Bombs Away” by BAYWUD

Q: I can hear that “Bombs Away” was written from a place close to your heart. Can you share a bit about what this song is about?

BAYWUD: “Bombs Away” was written about the end of a relationship. My inspiration really came from a number of my past relationships that failed. It’s the moment when you realize that it’s just not working. You’ve tried everything you can to save what’s left of the relationship, but then you have to let go. The song is the point when you ‘drop a bomb’ on what’s left of it, you find peace in the decision, and you move on towards the next chapter.

Q: How did you come up with “Bombs Away”?

BAYWUD: This particular song was co-written with one of my writing partners, Rune Westberg. Rune actually laid down the start of the track when I came to the studio, and didn’t really know what the song would be about. We knew the track would lend itself to a more moody vibe. From there, the lyrics just came and we thought it’d be great to have this idea of flying away from the chaos, dropping a bomb on the relationship, and flying to the future.

Q: What do you take inspiration from?

BAYWUD: Everything. Quite literally, everything. Most definitely, my own experiences in life are a huge part of all of my music. But, I’m also inspired by other people’s stories. I feel like when you hear someone else’s story, it almost becomes a part of you in a way. You can’t unthink it or ‘un-feel’ it. I know that sounds odd to say. I’m just so moved by the human condition, and I’m constantly fascinated by people.

Q: What would be a pivoting point for you as a musician?

BAYWUD: I feel like I’ve had several pivoting points already. Life is a journey, and I honestly take every day as it comes and seize every opportunity I can. Continuing to branch out and collaborate with other musicians, songwriters, and producers and just keep moving. I’m all for enjoying the entire ride, the entire journey.

Q: What are some challenges you’ve experienced? How did you overcome it?

BAYWUD: One of the greatest challenges in my life so far was drug addiction. I was heavily into drugs for a period of my life, and it nearly killed me. I look back now and wouldn’t even be able to recognize the person I was then. It took my focus away from everything, from living. I luckily have an amazing family and friends who basically saved my life. I’m very fortunate. And I don’t regret any of it. It was a dark period in my life, but I learned from it. It also helped me to realize what’s important in life. I care way less about the little things.

Q:  What motivates you in the pursuit of music?

BAYWUD: Honestly, I think just the love I have for it. That keeps me going. If I didn’t love what I do, I probably wouldn’t stick to it at this point. My manager, Patrick Conseil is also a huge support and helps motivate me to keep going when I get down about the business side of it all. He has been a rock for me. I would not be where I am if it weren’t for him. I’m incredibly grateful.
