Artist Interview: “Donnie Brasco” by Sacha

Q: Hey Sacha! We love having you on Rising Artists, tell our audience your background and a little bit about you!

SACHA: Hey! It’s a pleasure to be here. Thanks for having me. My passport says I’m Australian, but I was born in Malaysia and have spent half my life in Africa. I moved to Tanzania when I was 15 and that’s really where my interest in hiphop first came about. That’s where I learnt to rap, starting off by spending thousands of hours freestyling with the homies. From there it progressed into putting out my own tracks on SoundCloud using YouTube beats that I initially recorded and mixed on audacity. In 2016 I took a 3 year hiatus from music and only really started taking it seriously again in 2020.

Q: Do you write your own songs or is there a collaborator that you enjoy working with consistency?

SACHA: I write all my own music, but at this stage I’m not producing my own beats. That’s something I’m interested in branching out into in the future though for sure. Right now on the production side my biggest collaborator is TOD of the NOEGO collective.

Q: How would you describe your music in your own words?

SACHA: I would describe my music as souldful and melodic bangers infused with hard hitting and complex raps. To put a label on it (which I often try to avoid) I would say you could maybe call it alternative rnb, or neosoul, alternative rap? Just alternative I would say, haha. But there are some distinct elements of pop there for sure.

Q: You, Candilium, and Luke Lucid blend so groovy in this track, how did that collaboration blossom?

SACHA: Well we are all really good friends so it came about pretty naturally. Luke is a very talented artist and when I initially came up for the hook for the song in a session at the NOEGO studio I knew as soon as we started working on it that it would be a great idea to have him as a featured verse on the track. Candilium was a natural choice for a feature as well, as she and I had done some collab work before and found that our voices harmonized nicely. Overall I would just say we’re all really comfortable with each other, and that translates well into making nice music.

Q: Although the music video hasn’t premiered yet, how was the experience of recording the music video for “Donnie Brasco”?

SACHA: It was a great time. There was this really cool cemetery right next to my old apartment in Copenhagen that we thought would be a perfect place to shoot for the vibes we were aiming for. Funnily enough, in the video you can see that Luke and Lily’s outfits are matching. That was entirely unplanned! They were just totally in sync. It was a blast to record, and we had a lot of fun with it.

Q: Do you have any live performances we can catch you at soon?

SACHA: Yeah! I’m actually going to perform at Otherwise Bar in Townsville, QLD on the 20th of July. Come on down.
