It’s been a little ironic how a lot of music written before the disarray of 2020 somehow managed to still fall in line with all that followed. “Contempt For Others” is one of those songs. Even back in early 2019 when Ricky Damiani penned this one, there was something in the air that didn’t quite feel right about the world, so here’s to hoping a song like this can sway the world in new directions.
Creatives know that when you’ve got a lot of emotion built up inside, the only way to get it out is by making something. I do so with baking and Damiani does the same with songwriting. With a high level of frustrations brewing, “Contempt For Others” acted as his own release. Again, that was in 2019 and since then the song has sat in waiting due to a myriad of reasons. Now it’s acting as the lead single to Mock Deer’s upcoming March 2022 release, ‘Perceptions.’ That will be out later this year and features a selection of other tracks written around the same time as “Contempt For Others.”
Lyrically, you can hear the man behind the music working things out, but musically this song soars as this broadening folk song that comes through as modern-day Dylan with that speak-song style. Vocally, I really loved when things ramped up and gave similar vibes to Live’s leading man, Ed Kowalczyk. A powerful performance backed by lyrics that grasp just as much.
To hear “Contempt For Others” make sure to check Mock Deer out on all major music and streaming platforms now.
