Artist Interview: “Easy to Fall” and “Buzzcut” by Estella Dawn

Q: We really enjoy how empowering and fun the lyrics to “Buzzcut” are. What inspired you to write “Buzzcut”?

ESTELLA DAWN: Thank you so much! Buzzcut was really a reminder to myself to feel confident and empowered asking for what I needed in a new relationship. I’ve always been a chronic people pleaser and I wanted to flip that on its head with this track. To remind us it’s good to hold our own space, rather than considering shrinking and shaping to be what we think the other person wants.

Q: Walk us through your writing and production process in making “Easy To Fall.”

ESTELLA DAWN:

I wrote ‘Easy To Fall’ years ago, I was dating someone (that I still have a lot of love for) but I realized I wasn’t IN love with them anymore. I remember reflecting on how strange that was, that you could be so into someone one day and then seemingly the next that passion could be gone. There are so many songs about how hard falling out of love can be, but sometimes when you feel freer, lighter and more at peace without someone, falling out of love can be quite easy, I wanted to write from that perspective too.

In terms of production, this song originated on guitar, then I brought it into logic, added elements to flesh it out, brought all of those parts into the studio where I re-recorded them with session musicians! It always felt to me like it should have a band feel, I’m happy with where it ended up!

Q: We love the way your bluesy, sultry vocals mix with dance beats! What first got you into music?

ESTELLA DAWN:That is very kind, thank you! It may sound a little cliche but I can’t remember a defining moment where I thought “A HA I know I want to make music for the rest of my life” from a really young age I would make up songs that could go on for hours on end, as I’ve gotten older my process has just gotten a little more refined, and structured. I’ve played around with a bunch of different genres and styles and I think I’ve found a blend that fits my voice and writing style.

Q: What has been one of the highlights of your music career so far?

ESTELLA DAWN: Genuinely just getting to make music every day, I know that’s not a specific event but it’s something I think about constantly, the fact that I get to make something I love and people resonate and want to listen to it is crazy, it’s a constant highlight that I never take for granted

Q: What has been, so far, your favorite song to perform and why?

ESTELLA DAWN: I think probably ‘Winners’ it’s an upcoming single from my album, it has a really sassy, gritty, cheeky vibe and it’s super fun to sing!

Q: Do you have any plans on the horizon you’d like to share?

ESTELLA DAWN: I will be releasing a full length album later this year and there will be a new single dropping every 5 weeks leading up to that. Then if the stars align I’d love to tour!
