Blueprint Tokyo’s latest single “Say Anything” is bringing a nostalgic sound that we’re missing from today’s music.
The indie rock duo is based out of Oklahoma City and is made up of members Kevin and Andy. They’ve been on a musical journey together for many years and have overcome serious obstacles. Kevin was diagnosed with a degenerative bone disease that forced him to stop making music for a while. With the help of generous donations, he is now healthy and able to make music with Andy again under the new band name Blueprint Tokyo.
Their newest single “Say Anything” is a harmonious blend of 80’s synth pop and early 00s alternative rock. The intro begins with a classic, muted 80’s synth beat, and it opens with dark vocals very common for the rock of early Y2K. The instrumentals include some heavy drumming balanced out by a light, melodious guitar melody.
The lyrics in this track feel cryptic and can be left up to some interpretation. They carry a heavy tone and discuss fear of being alone and fear of the unknown. The chorus goes:
Scary movies scaring people
Who is waiting in the shadows
Scary movies scaring people
Who is waiting in the darkness
Blueprint Tokyo has a solid grasp on the sound they want to achieve. “Say Anything” immediately reminds me of popular 2000s bands like Coldplay, U2, and Muse. If you’re searching for a blast from the past, I think you’ll find what you’re looking for with this rock-solid duo.
