Artist Interview: “The Feeling” by Loren & Jessi McDonald

Q: Hi! I love the infectious instrumental and the angelic voice that accompanied it. Can you walk me through your creative process in creating “The Feeling”?

LOREN: Hi! Thank you for my first interview!! Very grateful.

I wrote the tune myself a while back, but only recently put the instrumental together after a heavy Swedish House Mafia binge which one hopes isn’t too apparent! A friend told me about Jessi and her vocal abilities so I immediately dropped her a line – always on the hunt for top singers! This is the first track she’s toplined on for a producer that isn’t of an acoustic sound and we’re very happy with the result – distinctive timbre and folk harmonies on an electronic beat!

Q: “The Feeling” is an upbeat and fun song to listen to; I can only imagine how fun it was to create it! What did you enjoy most about making this track?

LOREN: Recording the vocals with Jessi at Angel Studios – 100%. A special place so always a pleasure to go there. Collaboration is also the most enjoyable part of the process, and where the best results come from! Nonetheless, I did enjoy making the synths – there are 8 or so synthesisers and piano sounds stacked up which are a joy to make.

Q: “The Feeling” is unique as it is a hot-pot of genres, and there is something for everyone to enjoy. In your own words, how would you describe the music that you typically create?

LOREN: At the moment, pop-house. Calvin Harris, Fred Again…, Swedish House Mafia and all that jazz. Those guys are the source for most of the inspiration. Disco-house is in the works too! Soon come. Soon come.

Q: I’m always fascinated with an artist’s journey. Do you remember who or what first got you into music? Were you very young, or did you not delve into your craft until later?

LOREN: I’ve always had the bug so have been writing since I was knee high. I’ve only recently started producing so the releases to date and all the upcoming ones were mostly written years ago, bar some. Luckily have enough material sat on to keep releasing for the foreseeable!

Q: Walk us through your writing and production process in making “The Feeling”?

LOREN: As much of an advocate I am for collaboration, I do enjoy writing and producing by myself. When this happens, it’s inevitably all done on my old acoustic guitar at a much slower tempo. Then you take the guitar away, speed it up and find a top vocalist!

Q: What has been, so far, your favorite song to perform and why?

LOREN: Unfortunately as we have just started, we aren’t performing yet. Once there’s more of a presence on social media, I’ll get back to you on that…

Q: Any parting words to your fans?

LOREN: Apart from my parents and my family, I’d say ‘fans’ is pushing it as it is very early days hahaha. But in all seriousness, to those that do share and listen, I’m sooo grateful – all of these tunes would be sitting on a hard drive and to think they’re being blogged about, playlisted and played on radio stations is nuts so thank you thank you thank you!!!

Q: Tell everyone what is coming up next for you in 2023! Are any exciting projects in the works?

LOREN: Lots and lots of releases! Aiming for one a month with an array of different vocal talent. Music videos and lots of promo – I feel very lucky and proud so far as I’ve only just started and the music as I said has been blogged and playlisted, put in music magazines, and has done the rounds on radio stations. A long journey ahead, but I’m very happy! On that note, thank you guys for giving me your time to let me chew your ears off!
