Q: Hi! Loving the hard-hitting yet chill vibe of “ON THE DL”; can you walk me through the creative process on this track?
JAYRODDY: It means a lot for real! I actually made this song to post on Tiktok originally but was getting a lot of comments saying to finish it so I decided to release it as my 3rd single of 2023. The creative process started when my producer PAVMADEIT sent me the beat & I knew I had to go crazy. I decided I was just going to do a hook and verse so I could feature another artist and I felt that my boy Thorb was the perfect fit for the hype vibe.
Q: Did any real-life events occur in your life that inspired “ON THE DL”?
JAYRODDY: Every song that I release correlates with my life experiences. With lyrics such as “Never share my thoughts with no one that don’t breath success..” ‘ON THE DL’ goes into depth about the consequences of oversharing your plans with people who don’t see the vision. There’s been multiple occasions in my life when I felt that people looked down on me after I shared my goals/plan. At first I got discouraged but realized they just don’t have the same vision as me & can’t let their negative energy disrupt my journey.
Q: I’m curious about songwriting, as your lyrics are deep & emotional, yet you keep it catchy and light at the same time. Can you walk me through the writing process for this track?
JAYRODDY: I typically start with writing a hook, then start building the verses to match the theme/vibe of song. My music is a combination of emotive rap, boundary-pushing pop & a touch of R&B so I always use my emotions & experiences to paint a picture for my listeners.
Q: In your own words, how would you describe the music that you typically create?
JAYRODDY: My music is a direct reflection of the chaos & pleasure in my life. Some songs might be upbeat/happy vibes & other songs might be dark/emotional vibes depending on how I was feeling when I created them.
Q: Who would you most like to collaborate with, if it could be anyone in the world?
JAYRODDY: Most definitely Drake. I admire his versatility and ability to evolve his sound from year to year.
Q: I’m interested in how the creative/writing process works when you’re collaborating with someone. Did you guys hear the verses before the beat, after the beat, did you write together, etc.
JAYRODDY: If I want to collaborate with another artist I always have the song complete with an open verse ready for the featured artist. I like to make things as smooth as possible. In this case since I’m in MA & Thorb is in NY I just reached out to him with the open verse & he sent it back with a fire verse on it.
Q: What projects are currently in the works?
