“Prelude from Five Pieces for Two Violins & Piano” by Isobelle Austin

Isobelle Austin’s rendition of Shostakovich’s “Prelude from Five Pieces for Two Violins & Piano” is a testament to her unique perspective and creativity. She arranged the piece using a cello, and recorded all the parts herself. The cello’s deepness and beautiful arrangement of the classic tune showcase Austin’s authentic talent for creating beautiful art.

Isobelle Austin’s cello playing is a powerful emotional journey. Her unique interpretation of the Prelude is impossible to ignore, regardless of one’s musical preferences. The rich, low-toned vibe of the cello creates a bittersweet emotion, evoking a sense of loneliness. Yet, within these notes are moments of hope and a desire to do better, engaging the listener in a complex emotional narrative.

This Prelude was derived from film music written by Shostakovich for the 1955 filmThe Gadfly. The movie is about a priest who holds a secret–he has an illegitimate son. Knowing the meaning behind the film makes the song feel more powerful and melancholy, as it holds a disheartening meaning.

Isobelle’s cello arrangement of Shostakovich’s classic was recorded in her bedroom in London. Her associate, Dean McGinnes, helped with mixing and mastering, while Javier Madinabeitia and Pablura Herrera directed, filmed, and edited the music video.
