“Australia“ by Dom Brinkley

A catchy guitar riff and droning brass notes open this song, with anticipatory drum hits stabbing in before the full rhythm begins and the brass starts dancing across the song. Once the layered vocals begin, the intricate landscape of “Australia” by Dom Brinkley is set, and it continues to grow beautifully throughout the track. Different instruments at different points in the song play around with their own interpretations of the main guitar riff we hear at the beginning. This interplay of sounds and textures over one steady starting point makes the song interesting and ever-growing, holding your attention and guiding the emotions of the listener with ease. 

This track is a love song to the scenic nature of Australia, inspired by Brinkley’s own experience traveling around and camping throughout Australia. Lines like “river flowed, then I breathed and became aware” show Brinkley’s deep connection to these experiences and nature’s profound effect on him. A beautiful day and a rushing river seem simple and common, but taking a deep breath and really appreciating it can be very healing. Brinkley leans into that mindset with this song, and tries to sonically recreate those feelings with the lovely riffs and vulnerable vocals in “Australia.” 

Brinkley gives the listener space to feel any emotion at all, similar to how the Australian landscape allowed him to feel everything from joy to desolation. By the end of the song, he and the listener have been transformed through the thoughtful arrangement, enthralling instrumentation, and the inviting, dynamic vocal performance.
