Los Angeles-based country rock outfit Truckerbomb has brought their yule tide sentiments out of storage and returned to the airwaves with their latest holiday-inspired single, “Christmas Bush.” Led by frontman Troy Richardson, the project has graced stages all across America through the years as they deliver their unique blend of classic honky-tonk hooks and uptempo swing to fans of all backgrounds. As they release their first Christmas single to date, they veer away from the traditional emotions of the season and tell a story of missing a simpler life back home while feeling trapped in a city without a familiar atmosphere.
Sleigh bells ring to begin the piece as we feel the tone set around us. A deep percussive beat then appears to kick the tempo up and the music begins to take shape. A series of country-style guitars chime in as Richardson’s vocals appear to begin the narrative with the opening line “LA gets cold early. I miss my friends, I miss my girly. Without the snow, I know the seasons’ not the same.”
Embodying the old adage of good country only needs to be three cords and the truth, we feel a sense of connection with the artist and their story with every verse. The feelings of isolation expressed by the orator come across as genuine and relatable and reflect a sense of genuine vulnerability from the artists. While the month of December might feel romanticized in almost every holiday tune, this single takes a different path and allows listeners to reflect on a more real side of the season in a truly authentic way.
