“Power Hug“ by Trash Pals

Power Hug by Trash Pals is a six song EP that explores the different types of love in life, from platonic to romantic to internal. The two friends behind Power Hug, Conor Rayne and Gab Schnider, take the listener through a reflective journey about the vulnerability and beauty that exists in every kind of love.

The opening track of the EP, “Blossom,” is tender, hesitant, and hopeful. The lyrics talk about how love is frightening because it makes you feel so foolish, but that’s one of the most exciting things about love. The line “we don’t have to get it right, but I will do my best to try” is a sweet sentiment in the context of those feelings. Power Hug balances the acceptance that things won’t go perfectly with the hope that they will still work out anyway.

A particularly poignant track on the EP is the third track, “All This Time.” This song goes through the journey of finding love within yourself and beginning to truly accept who you are. Different sections use grooving rhythms, tight riffs and drum hits, or floating melodies to mirror the unpredictable and nonlinear path that is learning to love yourself. “Nice and slow I’m letting go, and now I’m making friends with myself” sums up the theme of the track beautifully, about how this process is not easy or quick, but worth it all the same.

A combination of acoustic and electric instrumentation throughout the EP creates a soft indie rock sound with catchy melodies and enveloping soundscapes. Pretty guitar riffs, swaying rhythms, and intimately layered harmonies create intrigue that lays the ground for the thoughtful storytelling throughout each track.
