“Let’s Fall Out For Christmas“ by J.J. Chamberlain

“Let’s Fall Out For Christmas” is an invigorating three song EP by J.J. Chamberlain, and though “Christmas” is in the title, this is not your typical jolly collection of holiday songs. Chamberlain subverts expectations by giving voice to the anguished and depressed feelings of the holidays. Though typically Christmas is thought of as a time for love and cheer, negative emotions can creep up just as easily, and can even feel more extreme when you contrast them to the positive messages swirling around during this time of year.

Chamberlain combines classic holiday sounds like chiming bells and uplifting guitar riffs with his own uptempo rock style, and of course his unique storytelling. The opening song of the EP is the title track, and with lyrics about wanting to break up with someone for Christmas, it’s certainly an interesting perspective you can’t find in other songs. Chamberlain sings “Christmas is coming and I don’t want you there.” There’s some humor to this track, but it’s also an interesting look at how spending the holidays with a partner can feel like a lot of pressure. Sometimes, you just want a break from love so that the holidays don’t seem like such a big deal. Plus, distance makes the heart grow fonder, right?

This EP is full of grungy guitars, pretty riffs, and catchy rhythms. With witty lines about Santa “breaking into homes just to make sure he gets fed” and other cynical perspectives, Chamberlain offers a fun listening experience for anyone who feels a little bah humbug during this season.
