“Culture Killer” is a rage-filled rock song about the dangers of the current climate of popular culture, specifically at the hands of social media. Gender Reveal Atomic Bomb uses grungy guitars, riveting drums rhythms, and an intense vocal performance to express their frustration with modern culture and the bittersweet effects of social media having so much influence over our everyday lives.
Though social media can be a good thing, especially for artists who want to share their art and connect with an audience, it has permanently changed the way people interact with each other. Much of social media makes it feel like everything is about entertainment and immediate gratification, and if you’re not interesting enough you get left behind. Not to mention the self-esteem and loneliness issues that can be brought up by comparing yourself to other people on social media. Lines like “wonder where the brain went” and “it’s just the marketplace of shallow validation” reflect on these phenomenons, offering dissatisfied commentary on how social media values superficial popularity over authenticity.
The intense arrangement, deep and ominous filtered vocals, and an electronic whining sound throughout the song that mimics an alarm going off, makes this track come across as a warning to the listener. Gender Reveal Atomic Bomb wants you to reflect on the culture you’re participating in, criticizing the effects of putting too much stock into online appearances. Even if social media is inescapable, being aware of the ways it can kill culture may help you avoid losing your true personality to the pressure of online conformity.
