In the first track on the EP, “NIGHT LIKE THIS,” Keonté sings about the special connection, and special night, he is having with a woman. He sings intimately about this woman and his yearning for her, and how good it feels for both of them to be alone together. The pauses in the beat that give the song little seconds of silence, along with a deep buzzing synth that heightens tension, create anticipation in the listener that matches the anticipation of the couple. Keonté says “she ain’t had a night like this in a long time” and asks her “how ‘bout me and you get some alone time?” to dive into that unique anticipatory excitement that comes with getting to be alone with someone you’re attracted to.
“SATIN,” the other song on the “YONAKA” EP, has a swaying beat and hypnotizing melodies. The eclectic form of the song, made up of quickly delivered lyrics and a sparse beat, contrasted with a layered and melodic chorus, keeps the listener on their toes. This track constantly offers something fresh, and whether it is satisfying ear candy ad libs or atmospheric synth chords, “SATIN” is as smooth as the fabric it is named for.
