“Chasing The Dragon” is a riveting rock EP by Shaven Primates, a four-piece band from the UK that blends different eras of rock and punk to create a uniquely dark and invigorating sound. This three song EP is captivating from start to finish, with thrumming bass, chugging guitars, and intensely satisfying drums that form the backbone over which Shaven Primates explores the many facets of the human experience.
The first track on the EP, “Airwaves” uses big, grungy guitars and catchy vocal melodies to draw the listener in. This song looks at the damage caused by societal expectations of “success.” Everyone defines success differently, but most everyone feels like they are not successful enough. Shaven Primates creates an arrangement laced with positive energy, and lyrics like “are we more than atoms, a thought to pass the time, another drop in the ether, we’re just the same” are both existential and comforting, reminding us of the smallness of our lives in the grand scheme of things.
“Babooshka” is a fantastic cover of the Kate Bush song, honoring her version while bringing something fresh and unexpected to the arrangement. This is followed by “I’ll Quit Tomorrow,” another uptempo and intense track full of gritty guitars and a dramatic vocal performance. This track explores that longing of wanting more, thinking “I need me a bigger dragon to chase,” but never actually acting on it. Whether the refusal to act comes from fear, or a reality check, the impassioned vocal and fun, chaotic arrangement captures that vacillation between chasing delusional dreaming and holding yourself back in too-comfortable reality.
