“My Sanity” is an intense and inspirational rock track by Rooftop Screamers, a genre-blending band that uses captivating instrumentation and relatable storytelling to craft soundscapes that are both fun and emotional. “My Sanity” follows the story of someone who is sick and tired of poor treatment from their partner. The relationship is toxic and one-sided, and vocalist Randy McStine infuses his vocal performance with passion as he comes to terms with the fact he needs to start putting himself first and leave the toxicity behind.
This track opens with pulsing synth and acoustic guitar strums, with a steady riveting beat quickly dropping in. Big ambience and uplighting guitar riffs join the arrangement in the chorus as the narrator finds his resolve to prioritize himself again, and thrumming bass adds a great backbone to the track. Lines like “you made me think I lost my mind” and “you built mazes in your heart” tell us that this relationship was more than typical arguing or tension. This person is manipulative, refusing to let themself be known, while demanding emotional labor from the narrator and playing with his feelings at the same time.
McStine decides he cannot live like this anymore, singing “starting today, this is all gonna change,” and “there’s one thing you’ll never take from me, my sanity.” In a situation like this, it can be easy to sacrifice some of your joy and comfort in exchange for keeping the other person in your life. But eventually, you have to realize it’s not sustainable, and rely on your own sanity to save you and get you out.
