“Les Shoes Du Paternel“ by Laura Wamba

“Les Shoes Du Paternal” by Laura Wamba is a riveting blend of R&B, soul, and indie electronic styles. This debut EP from Wamba contains five songs that all showcase the clear artistic vision, and uniquely captivating sound, of Laura Wamba. From floating atmospheres to grounded beats, from playful lyrics to vulnerable themes, it is clear that Wamba is a dynamic artist who always has something to say. Based in Paris, Wamba’s warm and inviting vocals deliver lovely stories in French- but even if you don’t speak French, these songs speak directly to your soul. 

This EP begins with a 48 second intro song, opening with spoken French and a swooshing synth that slowly builds into something more melodic and enveloping, surrounding the listener in a soundscape that gets you excited to hear the rest of the EP. From the first few seconds of the intro, to the end of “Les Shoes Du Paternal,” the jazzy horns, swaying beats, and inviting vocals craft sensual and vulnerable tones that keep you hooked. 

These songs contain multitudes of contrasting and relatable emotions that demonstrate just how nonlinear and confusing romantic relationships and self-growth can be. With tracks like “French Kiss” that speak of romanticizing an exciting crush, side by side with tracks like “DGA” and “Passe-Temps,” which look at outward toxicity in men (and inward toxicity at finding yourself repeating the same damaging relationship patterns), Wamba covers all the bases while creating cohesive themes that follow her throughout the EP. Floating atmospheres, grounded beats, and dancing instrumentation lay the backbone for these stories to shine.
