“Pretty/Fragile” is an incredibly energetic and impressively poignant song by The Rapid Onset, the one-man band created by performer and singer-songwriter Kiri Anne Ryan Bereznai. Though every instrument is played by Bereznai, her careful composition and aptitude for engrossing arrangements makes the song feel like it is being played live right in front of you. This track is the first single off of the upcoming album from The Rapid Onset, “Destroy! Destroy! Destroy!,” which is set to be released in the summer of 2025.
This track opens with heavy drums and a screamed “whoooo” as grungy electric guitars begin to riff. This short melodic riff reappears throughout the song, offering a satisfying ear worm lick every time it does. Riveting rhythms and yelling vocal ad libs give the song plenty of angst and ear candy, the hallmark elements of a punk rock song that Bereznai weaves into the track perfectly.
The lines “like a doll, I’m in your hands, I’m just a little toy, you get a grip and twist my head, destroy, destroy, destroy!” are very representative of the song as a whole, and likely of the upcoming album, as this line is where the album got its name. These lyrics are spoken with an ironic attitude and a palpable anger, referencing how enraging it can feel to be perceived as fragile and weak just because of your gender, social status, sexuality, or any other thing that others judge you for. Blunt, captivating instrumentation and an unforgettable vocal performance cement The Rapid Onset as an artist that needs to be on your radar.
