“Slow Motel“ by The Venz

“Slow Motel” by The Venz is an energetic rock pop track with a compelling narrative. The Venz is an electronic pop and rock duo that crafts invigorating sonic landscapes that keep the listener hooked from start to finish. The chemistry in this collaboration is palpable in every line, surely helped by the fact that these artists are a couple in real life. Originally written for a songwriting class, “Slow Motel” has taken on a life of its own beyond its first inception, becoming a poignant story about longing for a different life.

This track takes on the perspectives of two people, each described by a respective band member, who feel stuck in a subpar situation and are desperate to get out. The man, John, is “trying to see the sun through the rain, but nothing ever changes,” while the woman, Mary, is “searching for change” because of the toxic relationship she is in. All of us can relate to wanting something different, and we can find a sense of companionship in the lyrics of “Slow Motel,” even if we haven’t experienced the exact same situation. Though many of the lyrics are dejected and hopeless, like “we’re stuck in this present, there’s no use in living,” there is a certain catharsis tone that is uplifting and exhilarating. 

Big drums and grungy guitars provide a riveting backbone to the song, and sparse verses contrast with the soaring choruses to give “Slow Motel” a dynamic sonic journey. The catchy melodies dance across the arrangement, drawing you into the impressive storytelling.
