“The Siren” by MatAre is an enthralling punk rock tune that takes the listener through the dark tale of being called to sea by a siren, and then abandoned in the midst of dark ocean waves. MatAre is a versatile artist with a dedication to his artistic vision, even recording the vocals on the beach at night to capture the soul of the story in the production. Atlanta-based musician Matt Rousseau created this project to explore his life experiences, and his fascination with the ocean shows up clearly in “The Siren.”
The ocean is a vast and scary place, but is simultaneously beautiful and enchanting. MatAre represents this duality perfectly in the compelling narrative of “The Siren.” Sirens are a popular figure in Greek and Roman mythology, known for being half-woman, half-bird creatures that lure sailors to their deaths with an enchanting song. MatAre has been called by a siren in this song, but after chasing the sound, he finds himself “all alone in the dark, black sea” with nothing but the moon for company.
Pumping drums, thrumming bass, and ominous electric guitar melodies craft a sense of urgency in this song that matches the desperation of the narrator to get to the siren. MatAre yells “she calls from the dark black shore,” and “shore” echoes across the arrangement, just like the siren’s song might echo across the surrounding ocean. Unnerving chord changes help create an ambient and enveloping atmosphere that makes it feel like you yourself are lost at sea, stuck chasing the unreachable and deadly sounds of a siren’s song.
