“Chicago Kinfolk: The Juke Joint Blues“ by Terry Blade

“Chicago Kinfolk: The Juke Joint Blues” is a one of a kind blues album that both entertains and teaches, featuring classic, bouncing blues tunes as well as audio clips that inform the listener about the hallmarks and history of the genre. Terry Blade, an important name in modern blues music in Chicago, honors the genre with this album. His clear artistic vision and attention to detail pays homage to the innovative forerunners of blues music, while adding his own creative flavor to the arrangements. 

Some of the tracks on the album feature audio clips from notable names in blues history. The album opens with “Nothin’ But the Blues,” which contains words from Theresa Needham over a wailing harmonica and steadily plucking guitar. Needham is known as “the godmother of the Chicago blues,” because the tavern she owned played host to many famous blues musicians, such as Muddy Waters (who is also featured in a later track on the album). Opening this album with Needham is an impactful choice, honoring the juke joint that likely inspired the name of the album and Blade’s affinity for blues. 

Blade’s original songs on the album feature impassioned vocal performances, compelling and playful narratives, and lively instrumentation. “Gettin’ Tired Of You” is a standout on the album, with meandering melodies and satisfying vocal improvisations. Mini instrumental solos add ear candy, and jaunty guitars will have you tapping your foot to the captivating rhythm. It is clear Blade has an immense amount of respect for this genre, and he has certainly cemented his place within it.
