“This Is Where We Landed” by Josh Jensen is an introspective, acoustic rock album that draws on folk storytelling and country instrumentation to craft unique sonic landscapes that keep you on your toes from start to finish. With thoughtful lyrics and immersive instrumentation, Jensen paints beautiful soundscapes with this eleven track album. Jensen, a seasoned artist from Seattle, explores themes of love, loss, and hope. Much of the album was inspired by Jensen’s wife’s battle with breast cancer, and the deeply personal emotions he weaves into his music makes it all the more impactful.
The album opens with the track “Birdhouse,” an upbeat tune that makes you want to dance. It opens with the sounds of people cheering, making it feel like you’re hearing the song in person at a lively bar or festival. Jaunty acoustic guitars build the backbone of the song as the intimate vocal and warm harmonies pull at your ear. The shaker in the chorus, along with the claps in the second verse, give “Birdhouse” a captivating rhythm, making you tap your foot and sway your body to the beat. Metaphorical lyrics, like a line comparing serendipity to falling rain, showcase Jensen’s aptitude for songwriting.
Another standout track on the album is the closer, “The Circus is in Town.” Plucking guitar and snapping percussion carry you through the arrangement, and echoing vocals swirl across the track. Sound bites of running water, along with electronic, rippling synth textures, transport you to the circus. Lines like “if I were a flaming monkey, I’d burn it all to the ground” add a playful yet thought-provoking energy to the song.
