Artist Interview: “Dios A Ella” by Inez Leon

Q: “Dios A Ella” is a poignant track that address a heavy and meaningful topic. Can you talk about the creative process behind writing this song?

LEON: The melodicism and production style was inspired by a song I was obsessed with at the time called “Te Para Tres” by Soda Stereo and the subject matter was similarly related to death and grief. Producing the original demo was pretty instantaneous. I know I wanted strings and guitar to be the focus. The lyrics were harder because it was not an option for me to not properly and sensitively address this topic, but I also wanted the song to feel like a cathartic resolution in a way. I think the lyrics do a good job of acknowledging that grief is open ended and continuous for those experiencing it. Blind optimism from others in moments of tragedy can feel disingenuous and I wanted to give victims of femicide and their loved ones something to blame even if it was very metaphorical. I wanted this song to feel like those who have experienced loss in this way could take off the burden for a moment of constantly having to wrap their minds around how and why and what if.

Q: Why is writing about a topic like this important to you?

LEON: I’ve experienced relationship abuse before and that’s how my friend’s friend passed away who inspired this song. Gender based violence happens far too often and such targeted and senseless violence should never be brushed off or normalized and I hope this song supports that sentiment.

Q: Was there a pivotal moment in your life when you decided to follow your path as a musician?

LEON: Not one specific moment really, I’ve been singing since I was two years old and I always loved writing songs. But each project builds upon itself as I get older: more high production content, better produced and mixed music, more thoughtful story and world building.

Q: In your own words, how would you describe the music that you typically create?

LEON‘Del Alhelí’ is actually my first distinctly rock project. I usually make Indie R&B type of music and plan to continue with that sound on my next project.

Q: What has been one of the highlights of your music career so far?

LEON: I just had a release concert for the EP and almost all my friends and loved ones showed up and it was definitely a moment to soak in. I felt so grateful and loved. Coordinating my music with a band was so fun as well.

Q: What is coming up next for you?

LEON: I want to release a classical guitar EP this summer and a more Pop/R&B project in the fall. All the songs are already written. I’m excited!
