Q: It is so awesome to see a boyband in 2021. Tell us how you guys started “Flying Kites” and who plays what role in the band.
FLYING KITES: Haha I’m glad people think of us as a boyband, because we believe we all hold equal parts…but really we are a regular pop-rock band with big dreams. Justin Llamas is the vocalist, Darren Myers plays bass guitar, Joben Gonzales plays guitar, and Avery Kwong plays piano.
Q: Do you guys write your own songs or is there a collaborator that you enjoy working with consistency?
FLYING KITES: Our songs typically start with Justin writing lyrics and melody to a piano, while sometimes collaborating with other members in this area too. But yes, everything we put out comes only from us!
Q: How would you describe your music in your own words?
FLYING KITES: Our music is full of good times, friendship, and humor We bounce between pop, synth pop, and rock to make a unique sound with lyrics everyone can relate to. Even though most of are songs can be funny, they are absolutely relatable.
Q: What are some of your challenges you come across as a band?
FLYING KITES: Our biggest challenge might have been putting together an album during the pandemic and working remotely. We adapted to working through Zoom and phone calls, but working in person is so much better We’re happy the world is opening back up.
Q: Do you have any live performances we can catch you at soon?
FLYING KITES: We have some videos circling the internet from some of our live shows, when we performed regularly as a cover band. But we are looking forward to performing our original material sometime soon. Since things are opening up slowly, we have been pushing our material to the streaming and sync licensing world. Hopefully we’ll make a splash in that world soon!
Q: Your EP Bromance is coming out later this month, what can we expect from that release?
FLYING KITES: Our songs on the Bromance EP all touch on the topic of friendship, and they all have a bit of humor in them. Also, all of the songs are extremely catchy. We know it’s titled “bromance,” but this music is just as much for the girls as it is for the guys. Definitely take a listen–you will not regret it.
