There was a thread going around on Twitter the other day about posting the last picture you took before 2020 took well, a turn. It was interesting to see an array of happy-go-lucky faces and unknowing instances captured right before well, again – our realities got turned upside down. In the time since then, we’ve had many highs and lows both collectively and personally, and throughout it all, I’ve gotten to hear how it’s all impacted the art of music. Singer-songwriter Brick Blair may not like the term “pandemic art,” but musicians around the world, himself included, couldn’t help but be moved to write about all that was balled up inside them and from that came his latest, “On The Zooms.”
While “On The Zooms” definitely captures human existence from 2020 through today with the title a reminder of how everything went on Zoom to canceling flights to the array of masks worn, Brick Blair was also able to place a bit of evergreen in this song as it deals with themes that are a constant. He sings of not wanting to be erased, a fear many of us have day to day in relationships we feel may be going south to the constant looming of death. He also touched on the idea of the monotony of living inside endless loops, something that yes, was many of our truths in recent years but also something that many don’t want anyways in life as that’s not a way to live.
All of this is done in a very singer-songwriter manner with Brick Blair displaying a clear narrative for audiences to take in across a musical landscape made up of indie, country, and folk.
