“Throne of Your Grace” by Brighton, UK based alternative rock band The Qwarks is immediately characterized by its mania of guitar crescendos and warbling, experimental vocals that toe the line between sardonic and crazed.
The sneering vocals of the track sound distinctly, unmistakably British, reminiscent of so many old punk bands like The Sex Pistols, The Buzzcocks, and more. The genre of the track, however, is a clear frenzy of psychedelic rock and noise rock.
The band cite Frank Zappa as one of their influences, as well as Beefheart, Primus, Cardiacs, and Devo. Zappa in particular comes through strongly in “Throne of Your Grace.” The track also opens with graphic lyrics describing licking a toilet bowl, and the song is interspersed with bits of talk-singing, lending it an unsettling nature and theatrical quality that reminded me of Pink Floyd.
The lyrics of “Throne of Your Grace” explore trying to find success in the world of music: “Sorry to email again but… Oh baby, give us a gig, you run this town.” This can be an experience than is often dehumanizing and feels like you’re forced to grovel to pursue your dream and further your artistic vision. As the song progresses, so does the narrator’s desperation, as he cries: “What do you want us to be? We can be anything you want us to be! What niche are you looking for?…. We can do that for you, we can do that for you, yes!”. It’s certainly a feeling that anyone pursuing a goal and experiencing frustration can relate to!
“Throne of Your Grace” was released April 15th, 2022, and preceded by The Qwarks’ successful single, “You Are not Fans (You Are Our Friends)”. We’re certainly looking forward to more releases from The Qwarks!
