Artist Interview: “Good As Good” by Bimboy

Q: You killed the production throughout the whole body of work! What was the inspiration behind “Good As Gold”?

Thanks! It might seem a bit on the nose, but I kept hearing the phrase “Good as Gold” crop up in conversation and it kinda got my brain turning. I was wondering how many ways I could interpret it. Is it a façade that you put on to avoid your true colours? Is it something you have to be when people need you? Is it soulless materialism, or is it finding peace and acceptance within your soul? I tried to weave these themes into every song on the EP.

Q: I’m always curious about the artist’s backstory. What made you get into music?

I’ve loved music for as long as I can remember. I was lucky enough to grow up with a very music-oriented family which was definitely the catalyst for that. Originally I was dead set on being an actor and songwriting was just a hobby. But as I grew up and faced more and more battles with mental health and identity, I realised that I wanted to focus on being myself, not pretending to be someone else. I also hope that some people might find some comfort or guidance in my music.

Q: Did any real-life events occur in your life that inspired the EP?

100%. Every single word on this EP is true to my experiences. It sort of reflects my journey to becoming who I am now. Going from getting abused for how I looked and acted, to faking confidence to get through it, all while putting my mental health on the line for others while neglecting my own. The conclusion of the EP is one that I did actually reach. Realising that “Gold” isn’t a standard I had to hold myself to, it was something I already had. It’s something we all have. We just have to fight to keep it.

Q: What is your personal favorite song from the EP and why?

My personal favourite track is Superficial. I’m a sucker for trippy songs and this is by far the most psychedelic song on the project. I love the lyrics too, I’ve been told they’re pretty comforting and I agree. We live in a world where appearance is king, and Superficial is an anthem for everyone who doesn’t fit that mould. It makes me quite nostalgic too as it takes me back to my school days as a depressed, misguided kid. It sounds pretty grim but there was a certain comfort to it.

Q: We love the album artwork! What has been one of your favorite memories along the path to making your EP?

I think my favourite memory was running to my mate’s house after finishing writing the EP and performing the whole thing for everyone there. It wasn’t some crazy event, but just being able to show it to people and not have to say “oh I haven’t finished this bit” or “there’s gonna be lyrics here” was so satisfying. Little did I know, the recording, mixing, and mastering process would take me two years.

Q: Any parting words to your fans?

This is only the beginning, I’ve got a whole lot more up my sleeve. For now, keep doing you.
