Leanne Wilkins & the Weathered deliver an impressive auditory journey with their new single “Alt-Reality,” an alt rock track that will be a part of their upcoming album, The Art of Letting Go. With a catchy groove, captivating melodies, and an ultimately hopeful message, this song offers comfort against the ever-changing, unpredictable aspects of life.
“Alt-Reality” has an engaging sonic landscape and poignant lyrics like “long gone are the days that seemed so innocent and pure.” The track grapples with the heartache of living in divided communities, referencing a weeping nation, and voices a longing for solace in a different reality.
The chorus of the song finds lead singer Leanne Wilkins yearning for change: “wake me from this dream.” In a clever arrangement choice that actually makes you feel like you’re in a dream, the drums cut out during this line and the vocals are delivered in a soft, wishful voice surrounded by atmospheric “ooo’s.” Then, the song returns to the regular rhythm and Wilkins’ more powerful vocal delivery, as if the listener has been snapped out of the “dream” and dropped back into real life.
Though there is not a dull moment in this song, the near-two minute outro section is particularly enthralling. The soulful vocal hypnotizes the listener, repeating “all we have is love” as background vocals glide in and out, driving home this compassionate message. A psychedelic synth ramps up throughout the outro, becoming increasingly alien sounding as the song builds, almost as if the listener is finally ascending into the alternate reality that the track is named for.
