“Walking Away“ by Kelsie Kimberlin

“Walking Away” by Kelsie Kimberlin is a poignant pop ballad full of emotional lyrics and melancholy piano. Kimberlin examines a toxic relationship in this song and works to find her resolve to leave as she accepts that no true love should ever make her feel so unhappy. Even though it is not easy to walk away from the comfort of what is known, Kimberline chooses to look towards the future to an unknown life that will at least have the absence of this toxic person.

The mournful piano sets the scene for this vulnerable tale, with emotive strings and ambient, layered vocal pads joining in at other points in the song to further heighten the tension of the narrative. With lines like “I gotta start anew, far away from you,” we see Kimberlin grapple with the realization that the best decision for herself is going to cause a lot of pain. It’s not easy to leave a relationship, no matter how much the good times have faded. But Kimberlin finds the strength to put herself first, and inspires any listener going through a similar situation to do the same.

The music video for “Walking Away” shows Kimberlin literally walking away through empty streets lit by hopeful sunshine. As the video goes on, Kimberlin sheds more and more layers of clothing to mirror the weight of this toxic relationship slowly falling off of her. She holds a stuffed animal in the video, a sweet representation of finding comfort in her inner child and reclaiming the innocent wonder that this relationship may have taken from her.
