“Falling Under” is a riveting rock track by Awaiting Abigail, a fresh band out of Dallas, Texas with a lot of talent and a lot to say. This band, made up of three reuniting high school classmates and a father-daughter duo, brings the listener into their music through uptempo rhythms, huge guitars, and passionate vocal performances. This track offers a vulnerable look into a toxic relationship, opening with heavenly floating vocals before the enveloping sounds of the guitars slam into the listener.
Getting stuck in an unhealthy relationship can feel a lot like you’re being put under a spell, and Awaiting Abigail explores this metaphor in “Falling Under.” Lines like “whispers of deception tangled in my mind” show how confusing and intrusive a toxic partner can be, especially if the relationship started out healthy. You grow to trust and love someone, and when suspicious actions or hurtful words start appearing in your interactions, it is hard to reconcile the person you think you know with the person they actually are. The anguished vocals and intensity of the arrangement match the frustration over the pain of a situation like this.
The drums in the chorus become more intense to match the lyrics “falling under, falling fast.” The hypnotic repetition of “falling under” in the post chorus, as well as the more lethargic drum rhythms, sonically mirrors the feeling of falling under the spell of this person. Filtered vocals, gripping rhythms, and fervent electric guitars match the feeling of trying to break free from this harmful relationship.
