“Three” by Owen Young is a three song EP and the third chapter of Young’s Four part album, “Muddy River.” This EP contains particularly poignant songs composed of narrative driven lyrics, acoustic guitar plucking, and steady folk rhythms. Born during the pandemic, these songs are full of introspection and societal commentary, exploring the way both social dynamics and Young himself have been changed by the unprecedented events in the past few years.
The first track, “Voices In The Dust,” seems to be speaking to someone going through a hard time. Beautifully picked acoustic guitar and upbeat drums lay the backdrop for a bittersweet story. Lines like “you gave it all you had, you couldn’t always hide the pain” tell us that this person has always seemed to hold bravery and suffering at the same time. Some people are dealt a difficult hand, and watching a friend, family member, or someone you love fight to overcome hardship is an inspiring reminder that we must “do our best with what we find.”
“Runnin’ Down The River” and “That Could Have Been You” are equally as poignant as this first track, with the latter song expressing melancholy over the state of society. Young sings about how people born into a wealthy or privileged life are only living comfortably because they got lucky. Any one of us could have been handed a hard life, and it’s important to put ourselves in the shoes of others, offering empathy to our neighbors and kindness to every stranger.
