“Promise Me” is a pure and true love song all about committing to another person through the good and bad, and through the peaceful time and chaotic times. Cork asks his partner: “promise me you’ll never build a boat,” a simple statement that holds a lot of emotion. In this relationship, Cork hopes that there never needs to be an escape route, or a backup plan. It is only them two, and there is nothing else needed. That’s the kind of relationship many of us long for, one where the foundation is so strong that “floods and fears” and “winds and storms” have no hope of causing damage.
The music video for this song further adds to the nostalgic and passionate tones of the song. Filmed in black and white, with editing reminiscent of old silent movies, the short film shows a man performing on a makeshift stage, with a woman acting as his lone and rapt audience. Towards the end, there’s a cute moment where they switch hats and the woman takes the stage at the end instead. It’s a lovely representation of how the person we love is the only entertainment we want, and the only person we need in our audience.
