“The Bigger Picture” by Oscar Utterström is a dynamic and immersive album, combining lovely instrumentals with impactful lyrics to craft moving and poignant soundscapes for every track. Utterström, a Swedish trombonist based in Nashville, is used to contributing to other artists’ music, but his talent for composing really shines through in this album. With both lyrical and instrumental tracks, Utterström displays his aptitude for creating immersive sonic landscapes no matter which elements are dancing through the arrangement.

Jazz rhythms and acoustic instrumentation entrance the listener in this album, while slight shifts in energy and arrangements from song to song ensure that the album continues to surprise and satisfy the listener. The opening track, “Forward,” is a standout on the album, with plucking strings, lilting piano, and mournful horns backing the intimate and warm vocals from Molly Parden. Lyrics like “what can I do to make it through another night” and “I’ve got to keep moving forward” show the narrator trying to move on from a difficult time. In the midst of grief, heartbreak, or any other negative experience, those feelings can seem endless and overwhelming. But this song contains a hopeful, if melancholy, resolve to just keep working to move forward.
