“KEYS“ by Tilleby

“KEYS” by Erik Tilleby is a beautiful, six-track EP made up of piano compositions. Creating a body of work with solely piano tracks was always a goal of Tilleby’s, and he goes above and beyond this achievement with “KEYS.” From ominous moods to lively playing, this EP takes you through an emotional journey. Based in Sweden, Tilleby is a thoughtful and innovative artist that draws on classical and jazz music while putting his own spin on it. With these tracks, he cements himself as a notable name in the piano world. 

The EP opens with “Visa från Qvarsebo,” which starts with a simple, repetitive bass line that builds the backbone of the track as piano begins to play beautifully overtop of it. The bass walks along as the piano meanderers, shifting from little trills to slower melodies to provide a dynamic sonic journey. Sometimes, you can hear the click of the piano keys as Tilleby presses down, making it feel like you are sitting right there in the room with him, which adds a lovely layer of intimacy to the atmosphere. 

Another standout on the EP is “Winter Meadows.” Soft and sweet, the beginning of the song has many moments of space between playing that allow the ambience of the track to really ring out and sink in. The song takes its time, crafting an introspective and meaningful sonic journey that allows the listener to feel whatever emotions may be rising to the surface. The melodies get more rapid as the song goes on, as if the darker mood in the beginning of the song is fading away and becoming more hopeful.
